The Robert Burns poem "Hallowe'en" (from 1785) is one of the most thorough descriptions of what Scottish Halloween celebrations were like in the 18th century. Throughout the long poem, young folk practice various fortune-telling methods for determining the identity of future loved ones, often to comic result: "fechtin' Jamie Fleck", for instance, practices a hemp-seed sowing ritual but is startled when it's not his loved one he sees, but "Grumphie" the pig!
